I just love these animals: they may be Europe’s smallest deer species, but muntjac are a fascinating and challenging quarry to hunt. Here is a brief outline about these little deer, how they got established in England, and what you need in order to hunt them.

Sarah Mottram grew up in Reading, a town in the home counties of England but moved to Scotland in 2008 to be with her gamekeeper husband. She works alongside him as his underkeeper on the 6,500 acre Hopetoun Estate, near Edinburgh, helping on shoot days, picking-up birds with one of their 14 gundogs. She’s passionate about the outdoors, game cooking, gundogs and country sports photography.

Louise Farmer is a central England Regional Officer for the British Association of Shooting and Conservation Ltd (GB). Rifles, shotguns and the countryside have been a constant in Louise’s life. Her father was a gamekeeper and lecturer, and growing-up she worked alongside him on a Northamptonshire shoot. At the end of the shooting season, her hard work was rewarded by shooting on beaters’ day.

31-year-old Emma Perrott grew up hunting alongside her father in the south-east corner of the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. It was a normal part of family life to go shooting, stalking and lamping foxes. Father and daughter have hunted all over the UK, and Emma is now based in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, with her fiancé, a professional stalking guide. Emma is a member of the UK Zeiss Pro team.
