In the 1970s, Texan George L. Hoffman enlarged the case of the mother of all big game cartridges, the .375 H&H Mag., to .416 caliber (10.6 mm) and loaded it with a 400-grain bullet, thus giving birth to the .416 Hoffman. Remington took up the idea and in 1988 the .416 Remington Magnum was created, which is the subject of the following article.
