Baschieri & Pellagri: reloading powder for handgun ammo

Baschieri & Pellagri gives us another opportunity to look at reloading: this time especially for pistol and revolver ammunition.

Technician Gianluca Garolini shows us the main necessary stages to correctly reload .45 ACP, one of the most popular ammo with target shooters.

Baschieri does in fact cover the whole range of the main calibers, with a wide choice of powders for pistols, featuring different burn rates of course. Baschieri dibasic powders for metal ammunition are ball powders with a high gravimetric density, high energy level and excellent chemical stability, together with low levels of hygroscopicity and very little sensitivity to climate factors.

Pistol, ammunition .45 ACP and targets
Together with the team from Baschieri & Pellagri, we were present at the refilling operations for .45 ACP gauge ammo with the new dibasic powders, and then at the firing tests at the range.

BP 01 LIGHT PISTOL (used by us for reloading in the video):

  • Burn rate: Medium / High.
  • Performance benchmark: Winchester 231 e 450.
  • Use (indicative):  ideal for cartridges with a low working pressure and moderate recoil, for firing at paper targets.
  • Calibers: 6.35 Br.; 7.65 Br.; .32S&W Long; 9 Short; 9x19; 9x21; 38 Special; .40 S&W; .45 ACP; .45 Long Colt.

For low-power, target shooting cartridges it can be used with the following calibers: .44 Magnum; .41 Magnum; .357 Magnum

Shooting range target
At different distances on the range, using paper targets we tried out the stability and efficiency of ammunition reloaded using Baschieri Light Pistol powder.

BP 02 PISTOL

  • Type: Double base ball powder.
  • Burn rate:  Medium / Slow
  • Performance benchmark: Winchester 540 / Hodgdon HS6.
  • Use (indicative): ideal for high-power cartridges with high and/or very high working pressure. Also for medium-power target and trap shooting cartridges.
  • Calibers: 7,65 Parabellum; 9x21; .38SAA; .357 Mag.; .357 SIG; .38 SA; .40 S&W; .44 Magnum.

With M410 powder charges are often highly compressed.

Baschieri & Pellagri propellants
The propellants developed for handguns by Baschieri & Pellagri are double base ball powders, available at different burn rates for different calibers.

M 410/2

  • Type: Double base ball powder.
  • Vivacità combustiva: Very slow.
  • Performance benchmark: Vihtavuori 3N38 and N-105
  • Use (indicative): Ideal for magnum cartridges for handguns.

After the reloading operations the immediate testing at the range of .45 ACP ammunition gave excellent results on targets at 10 and 25 metres. Let’s take a look at the images, which speak clearly for themselves.
