Sauer S 101 Highland XTC, a new super-light rifle for mountain hunting

A perfectly balanced rifle with a carbon fiber stock and a fluted barrel with threaded muzzle for suppressor mounting, that sets a new in-house weight record: the new Sauer 101 Highland XTC rifle by J.P. Sauer & Sohn , Germany's oldest and most traditional gun manufacturer, guarantees typically German reliability and accuracy. With the claim “Peak performance for summiteers”, the rifle features a new high-tech surface treatment on the barrel and receiver. The bolt is also fluted to reduce weight. Stock is hand-laid. All other features are typical of the renowned S 101 series.

The Sauer S 101 Highland XTC is available with barrel lengths of 20”/ 51 cm for standard calibers and 22”/ 56 cm for Magnum calibers, but lengths of 18”/ 47 and 24”/ 62 cm are also available on request.

The goal that J.P. Sauer & Sohn's technicians had set themselves with this project was to keep the weight of the carbine below 2500 grams. In the end, the result was achieved: the .308 Winchester caliber version with 18”/ 47 cm barrel weighs 5.4 lb / 2455 grams

It was possible to go even further, but as Sauer CEO Matthias Klotz says: "We didn't want to make the rifle any lighter, because in the end, balance and shooting comfort must also be in line with each other. In addition, we invested in the surface finishing of barrel and receiver and brought a technology to series production that outshines everything else".

This technology is called "DLC", which stands for "Diamond Like Carbon". It involves bombarding the steel with carbon atoms in a high vacuum under plasma: the energy released causes the carbon to turn into an infinitesimally thin, diamond-like coating.  “The layer is 40 times thinner than a human hair but in practice it offers four big advantages: maximum rust protection, maximum wear resistance, impressive surface hardness and an extremely valuable surface feel,"   explains Matthias Klotz.

The new Sauer S 101 Highland XTC will be available from mid-March 2020 in all calibers of the S 101 series and, depending on the caliber, in barrel lengths from 18 to 24 inches (47 to 62 cm). The price in Germany is 3995 euro (MRSP).
