Wilson Combat Bulwark: a modern double-stack 9mm with a 1911-style trigger

The Bulwark’s external dimensions make it compatible with many holsters originally designed for the Glock 19.

‘Bulwark’ literally means a bulwark, bastion or defensive fortification, and Wilson Combat has chosen this name for its new pistol. The Bulwark marks a significant turning point for Wilson Combat, an American company best known for its refined interpretations of the Colt 1911. However, the new pistol is not just another double-action variant of the platform designed by John Moses Browning: it is a completely new model, combining the trigger qualities of a hammer-fired pistol with the size and practicality of modern semi-automatic service pistols.

Chambered in 9 mm Luger, the Wilson Combat Bulwark is similar in size to a Glock 19 and uses a proprietary double-stack magazine with a capacity of 15 rounds. Wilson Combat markets it for both concealed carry and professional use. Despite its all-metal construction, the stated unloaded weight is approximately 944 grams.

The grip module is machined from solid aluminum and fitted with G10 grip panels.

The word “bulwark” literally means a defensive wall, rampart or stronghold – an appropriate name for Wilson Combat’s new pistol.

The Wilson Combat Bulwark is optics-ready and uses the proprietary Wilson Combat Pin Technology direct-mount interface.

The Bulwark represents a significant departure for the Arkansas based manufacturer, best known for its highly refined interpretations of the classic and venerable Colt 1911 design. This is not simply another double-stack variation of John Moses Browning’s pistol, however. Instead, the Bulwark is an entirely new platform that combines the trigger characteristics of a hammer-fired pistol with the dimensions and practicality of a modern service handgun.

Chambered in 9mm Luger, the Wilson Combat Bulwark is roughly comparable in size to a Glock 19 and uses a proprietary 15-round double-stack magazine. Wilson Combat positions the pistol for both concealed carry and professional use. Despite its all-metal construction, the manufacturer lists an unloaded weight of approximately 33.3 oz (944 g).

Wilson Combat Bulwark: the hammer is there, but you can’t see it

It may look like a striker-fired pistol, but the Wilson Combat Bulwark actually uses a fully enclosed internal hammer.

Mechanically, the most distinctive feature of the Bulwark is its fully enclosed internal hammer.

This arrangement retains the ignition system and trigger characteristics associated with a hammer-fired pistol while eliminating the external hammer spur that could potentially snag on clothing during the draw.

The Wilson Combat Bulwark field-stripped into its main components.

The Bulwark uses a straight-pull trigger, much like a 1911, with a stated pull weight of 3.75 to 4.25 lb (approximately 1,700–1,930 g). Wilson Combat describes the trigger as having a smooth travel, crisp break and short, clearly perceptible reset.

The pistol incorporates four independent safety mechanisms. These include a grip safety, a trigger safety, a firing-pin block and additional mechanical blocking of the trigger and trigger bar until the pistol is properly gripped. There is no conventional frame-mounted manual thumb safety.

At the heart of the pistol is a removable stainless-steel fire-control module with integral frame rails. The serial number is located on this component, following the modular architecture now used by several contemporary handgun manufacturers.

The grip module is machined from solid aluminum and fitted with G10 grip panels featuring Wilson Combat’s aggressive BRICK-pattern texturing.

Match-grade barrel and direct-mount optics

The Bulwark’s slide is also machined from stainless steel and protected by a black nitride finish. Deep front and rear cocking serrations provide a secure purchase for slide manipulation, while longitudinal serrations machined into the top surface are intended to help reduce glare in bright light.

The hand-fitted match-grade barrel measures 4" (102 mm). Its muzzle sits flush with the front of the slide and features a recessed crown, helping protect it from impact and damage. The pistol’s notably low bore axis should also help limit muzzle flip and speed up follow-up shots.

Standard irons consist of a Wilson Combat Battlesight rear and a front sight with a red fiber-optic insert.

The slide is also cut for direct mounting of a red-dot sight using Wilson Combat Pin Technology, a proprietary system designed to accommodate a range of optics without relying on a collection of separate adapter plates.

A Picatinny accessory rail beneath the barrel provides mounting space for weapon lights or laser aiming devices. The magazine release is reversible, while the slide stop sits nearly flush with the frame.

According to Wilson Combat, the Bulwark’s external dimensions also make it compatible with many holsters originally designed for the Glock 19 – a particularly useful detail for a pistol intended in part for professional use.

Wilson Combat also states that it endurance-tested the platform by firing 5,000 rounds without cleaning or lubrication and without experiencing a malfunction.

The Bulwark is sold through Wilson Combat and its authorized dealer network and ships with two 15-round magazines and carries an MSRP of $1,899.

Rather than being another double-stack 1911 in the strict sense, the Bulwark is a thoroughly modern semi-automatic pistol built around one of the 1911’s most appreciated characteristics: its trigger feel.
