For top performance: SIG Sauer P226-XFIVE EXTREME and P226-XFIVE NIGHTMARE

Originally designed for the XM9 Service Pistol Trials (aka Joint Service Small Arms Program) of the US Armed Forces that were held in 1984 to find a replacement for the M1911A1, few service pistols have built a record as recognizable as the SIG Sauer P226. Adopted and used for decades by US Navy SEALs, it has earned its place among the reference designs in the full-size combat pistol category thanks to a well-documented combination of accuracy, durability, and reliability. With the claim "Two distinct builds. One uncompromising platform," the P226-XFIVE series now takes that foundation in a more specialized direction, with two 9mm models intended for shooters who value the weight, stability, and mechanical refinement of all-metal pistols: the P226-XFIVE EXTREME and the P226-XFIVE NIGHTMARE.

P226-XFIVE EXTREME and P226-XFIVE NIGHTMARE, variations on the P226 theme

The P226-XFIVE EXTREME uses a 5” bull barrel matched to a Nitron XSeries SIG-LOC optic-ready slide, a configuration intended to improve lockup consistency and allow direct mounting of modern red dot optics. The stainless steel frame, also finished in Nitron, gives the pistol a substantial feel in the hand, while the integrated 1913 accessory rail adds compatibility with lights or other accessories.

The SIG Sauer P226-XFIVE EXTREME features a 5” bull barrel, a Nitron XSeries SIG-LOC optic-ready slide, and the AX3 single-action-only trigger system.

The trigger system is one of the defining elements of the pistol. The AX3 single-action-only system is fully adjustable and, on the EXTREME, is fitted with a curved, skeletonized trigger. This allows the shooter to tune the pull characteristics to suit a more precise or competition-focused setup. Controls are arranged with fast handling in mind, including the improved XSeries extended slide catch, while XRAY3 front and rear sights provide a practical backup sighting system for varied lighting conditions.

Grips are custom Hogue G10 Piranha, whose sharply textured G10 surface offers a positive hold during rapid fire. An alloy magwell helps guide magazines during reloads without adding unnecessary bulk. The pistol is supplied with three 20-round steel magazines with alloy base pads, or three 10-round magazines where local regulations require them.

The P226-XFIVE NIGHTMARE follows the same basic technical layout but presents it with a different emphasis for elite perfomance. It retains the 5” bull barrel, Nitron XSeries SIG-LOC optic-ready slide, Nitron-finished stainless steel frame, and 1913 accessory rail, so the underlying mechanical package remains focused on stability, repeatability, and optic compatibility. Where it differs is in its handling details, sighting arrangement, and overall finish treatment.

The P226-XFIVE NIGHTMARE follows the same basic technical layout of the EXTREME model, but adds a fiber optic front sight with an adjustable rear target sight. Also, note the flat trigger blade.

Its AX3 single-action-only trigger system is fully adjustable as well, but here it uses a flat trigger blade. This gives the shooter a different trigger feel and makes fine-tuning the break an important part of the pistol’s character. E-Nickel is used on the trigger and controls, adding corrosion resistance and a clear visual contrast against the darker Nitron finish.

The NIGHTMARE is fitted with custom Hogue G10 Nightmare grips and an integrated magwell. For sights, SIG Sauer pairs a fiber optic front with a removable, adjustable rear target sight, a combination suited to shooters who want both speed in acquisition and the ability to refine point of impact. The improved XSeries extended slide catch is also included, and magazine equipment mirrors the EXTREME: three 20-round steel magazines with alloy base pads, or three 10-round magazines where required.
