F.A.I.R. SLX 692 Gold over-under shotgun, the field test

The SLX 692 Gold model is part of the range of over-unders dedicated to hunting. Considering its characteristics, it’s a multi-purpose shotgun that, as its name suggests, has been very well studied in its aesthetic details, with gilded engravings and a well cared for finish. We’ve referred to its versatility since in the 12 and 20 gauges it was tested by the company with steel shot cartridges and non-lead shot with which it’s therefore possible to face hunts in wet environments, also considering the overall ruggedness of the shotgun and the different barrel lengths suited to different types of environment and wild game.

Machined from solid blocks, the receiver of the SLX 692 Gold over-under features a silver-colored finish, with long side plates and fine gold-inlaid engravings depicting wild game in flight.

The main action components such as the receiver, bottom receiver, forend iron and monoblocs are machined from forged blocks. The SLX 692 Gold over-under is manufactured by F.A.I.R. in 12, 20, 28 gauge and .410 bore, with three scaled actions in 12, 20 and 28 gauge. These shotguns feature automatic ejectors and a gold-colored selective single-trigger, but on request they can be supplied with double trigger and in the 4 gauges the barrels are already equipped with Technichoke XP50 internal and interchangeable chokes as standard. Of particular importance is the possibility, in the 20 gauge model, to have interchangeable barrels in 28 gauge and .410 bore

The care in aesthetics is evident in the slender design of the receiver and its silver finish with gold-inlaid, finely laser-engraved wild game on both long side plates and on the bottom of the action. Pheasants and partridges in flight alternate on the side plates, while a woodcock and the model name embellish the lower receiver. Both for its chromatic effect and proportions, the oil-finished, fine-pitch checkered select walnut furniture go perfectly with the metal parts. The stock feature a pistol grip, wide and easy to handle, while the forend is a Schnabel type. The brass shield embedded in the butt stock that offers hunters the possibility of engraving their own initials, is one of those additional aesthetic touches that characterize the SLX 692 Gold version.

The weight of the over-under is standard: it isn’t tiring when walking and makes the gun stable even when shooting medium-load cartridges.

The tri-alloy steel barrels are manufactured by bar drilling and internally chromed to ensure longer life and avoid corrosion over time. The X-Cones internal geometry provides a gentle and elongated cone to reduce the negative effects of recoil when firing and ensures fast and well distributed patterns also thanks to the narrow bore. The upper rib is ventilated, checkered and non-reflective, while the central one is full. The overall weight of the F.A.I.R. SLX 692 Gold over-under in 20 gauge version is around 98.7 oz / 2.8 kg, a standard weight, percet to guarantee gun stability and accuracy even with medium loads both when hunting from hides and when stalking, thanks to a 3” / 76mm magnum chamber that allows the use of different ammunition, from 24 to 36 grams. In conclusion, by assembling different barrels according to hunting needs among those available from 26 3/4”, 28” or 30” (68, 71 or 76 cm), over-under fans will be able to rely of the dependability of a rugged and aesthetically satisfying shotgun.
