Now upgraded to the A3 variant, the BDT - Beretta Defense Technologies ARX-160 assault rifle was showcased at the 2015 edition of EnforceTac, a side event of the IWA OutdoorClassics expo in Nuremberg (Germany) dedicated solely to professional, military, law enforcement and government-oriented firearms, ammunition, equipment and other products.

Already issued to élite units of the Italian Armed Forces, soon to be fully adopted in replacement of the AR-70/90 weapon system, and also enjoying good sales abroad, the Beretta ARX-160 is extremely lightweight thanks to its reinforced polymer chassis, and is built around the most modern canons in terms of ergonomics, modularity, performance and user-friendliness in general. Although offered in 5,56x45mm NATO in its baseline configuration, the ARX-160 can be converted to other calibers, such as 7,62x39mm and .300 AAC "Blackout". A vastly improved and modified battle rifle variant of the platform, dubbed the ARX-200 and chambered for the 7,62x51mm NATO caliber, is now reaching the final development stages.

At the Nuremberg Fair Center, Beretta Defense Technologies announced that the ARX-160 A3 assault rifle has been accepted as one of the five final contenders for the French Ministry of Defense trial that will select a 5,56x45mm NATO caliber rifle to replace the venerable, and now aging, FAMAS bull-pup as the new unified French service rifle. Beretta's rifle will compete head-on with designs submitted by SIG Sauer, FN Herstal, Heckler & Koch and HS Produkt.

Following the early evaluation phase, which should end by mid-2015, the five final contenders will be submitted to a lenghty field evaluation procedure that will ultimately select a winner.

The French tender will require the winning company to set up an important subsidiary in France, and to provide up to 90000 rifles in a five-years timespan, purportedly starting in 2017. Beretta is indeed offering the ARX-160's whole shebang: rifles will come complete with their replacement barrels, and Beretta is also throwing in the undercarried, type-specific 40x46mm-SR GLX-160 modular grenade launcher, a line of purpose-developed ammunition, the Steiner line of optical and electro-optical aiming devices and the entire line of Steiner eOptics (formerly Laser Devices) laser aiming and target acquisition/designation modules.
