Within the market for observation optics, there is currently an increasing trend towards high-magnification spotting scopes, which appeal to hunters and birdwatchers (aka birders) alike. There has been a gap in the market for a long time, particularly in the low price segment compared to the well-known top dogs. Optics specialist Minox, among others, is now putting an end to this and announcing its 20-60x80 ED spotting scope model and the matching tripod. We took a closer look at the optics and the new tripod.
New Minox 20-60x80 ED spotting scope in detail

The new spotting scope from Minox offers variable magnification from 20x to 60x and therefore opens up a wide range of applications, from an overview at long distances to extremely detailed observation of game. The large obbjective lens diameter of 80 mm ensures a high level of light absorption which, in conjunction with the 88 per cent light transmission, guarantees a bright and clear image. Even in difficult lighting conditions, such as at dusk, the image remains rich in contrast and true to color, according to Minox. The field of view ranges from 36 meters at minimum magnification to 20 meters at maximum magnification at a distance of 1,000 meters. This allows both a wide overview and a focussed view of details. Expressed in angles, this results in a field of view of 2.1 to 1.1 degrees.

Minox has also focussed on practicality in terms of ergonomics: the 408-mm long and 165-mm high housing has a width of 98 mm and weighs 1,925 g. A non-slip rubber armoring is designed to hold the spotting scope securely in the hand and the focusing wheel allows intuitive focus adjustment. The spotting scope is IPX7 waterproof (it withstands incidental exposure to water of up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes) for use in a wide range of conditions and remains fog-free thanks to the nitrogen filling.
With a close focusing range of just six meters, the device is not only suitable for observation at long distances, but also allows precise recognition of details at close range. The operating temperature range extends from -25 to +55 degrees Celsius, meaning that the spotting scope can be used reliably all year round and in a wide variety of climates. On the lens side, Minox has fitted the spotting scope with a 1/4"-20 thread, which ensures great compatibility with corresponding accessories.

New Minox tripod made of aluminum and carbon fiber
Minox has introduced a new tripod to match the spotting scope. The material combination of carbon fiber and aluminum should ensure a high level of stability and at the same time have a low weight of 1.7 kilograms. The swivel head with 1/4" mount allows for flexible adjustment and quick attachment of the optics.
With a maximum height of 1.57 meters, the hunter can use the tripod standing up, while the minimum height of 170 mm allows for flat observation positions. When folded, it measures 560 mm and is therefore easy to transport. Despite its low weight, according to Minox the tripod can carry a maximum load of up to 8 kilograms – enough to keep the spotting scope stable and secure.
The three legs, each with three segments, offer flexible adjustment to different surfaces. An integrated spirit level is designed to support precise alignment and the quick-release plate ensures that the spotting scope can be mounted or removed quickly.
