New Ruger AR-556 MPR with Proof Research carbon fiber barrel

After introducing the AR-556 series – the company's own AR-15 platform – some years ago, Ruger has been constantly adding new variants. The newest option in the Multi-Purpose Rifle family (that's what MPR stands for) now features a Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped barrel which is  significantly lighter than standard barrels while still offering excellent accuracy and repeatability. The barrel is 18”/457 mm long and is chambered in .223 Wylde, a hybrid chamber that safely, accurately, and reliably functions with both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO ammunition. A Ruger Elite 452 two-stage trigger, Magpul PRS Lite stock, and an MOE-K2 grip are part of the latest AR-556 MPR rifle version. The bright-colored trigger and safety selector lever are distinguishing accents of this model.

The flat-top lower receiver of the AR-556 MPR is made from aerospace-grade 7075-T6 aluminum forging and includes a forward assist, dust cover and brass deflector.

Ruger originally launched the AR-556 series in-line with the international trend of an increasing demand by civilian shooters for modern sporting rifles – that is, semi-automatic centerfire long guns cosmetically and, partially, technically patterned after modern military-issue weapons – that would offer reliability, rugged construction, and affordable prices.

The 15" length handguard is free-floated for accuracy with Magpul M-LOK accessory attachment slots at 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 positions. Additional slots are on the angled faces near the muzzle. Trigger and safety selector lever are bright-colored.

The AR-556 MPR with carbon fiber barres uses a rifle-length gas system. Lower receiver is fitted with a Magpul PRS Lite stock with adjustable length of pull and comb height for the best fit, paired with a Magpul MOE-K2 grip. In the MPR rifles the 15" length handguard is free-floated for accuracy. Magpul M-LOK accessory attachment slots at 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 positions with additional slots on the angled faces near the muzzle allow for the mounting of any accessory. The muzzle itself is 1/2"-28 threaded for standard accessories and comes standard with a radial port muzzle brake that significantly reduces felt recoil and flip. Bolt is mil-spec 9310 and is machined, shot peened and proof tested for strength and durability. Bolt carrier and gas key have chrome-plated inside diameters to provide enhanced resistance to hot gases.

A two-stage Ruger Elite 452 AR-Trigger provides a smooth 4.5 lb/2,041 g trigger pull. Hammer spring is full-strength for consistent primer ignition and a lightweight hammer that enables a faster lock time for improved accuracy.

The Magpul PRS Lite stock's length of pull and comb height are adjustable. Grip is a Magpul MOE-K2.

Made from aerospace-grade 7075-T6 aluminum forging, the flat top upper receiver includes a forward assist, dust cover and brass deflector. An uninterrupted Weaver/Picatinny rail runs all the way on top of the upper receiver and handguard for easy attachment of magnified optics, red dots or open sights (the rifle comes with no sights).

Compared to the standard Ruger AR-556 MPR that sells for $1089, you have to pay a premium for the carbon fiber wrapped barrel version: suggested U.S. retail price for the new Ruger AR-556 MPR with Proof Research carbon fiber barrel is set at $2049.00, with a 30-round Magpul PMAG magazine included.
