New FN ARKA, the SCAR heart into an AR outer body

First of all, the new FN ARKA rifle is not an extension of the SCAR family, nor is it intended to replace it. Instead, the ARKA expands FN’s rifle portfolio by offering a different solution: SCAR-derived mechanical reliability inside a layout that feels immediately familiar to users trained on the AR-15/M4 pattern. The name ARKA refers to the French word arc, meaning bow – a symbol of controlled power, precision, and strength in both offense and defense. It also suggests the idea of an archetype: a benchmark rifle platform intended to combine familiar handling with the ruggedness, durability, and reliability. At its heart is the short-stroke gas piston system developed for the combat-proven FN SCAR. This choice sets it apart from conventional direct-impingement AR-type rifles and is intended to deliver superior reliability, service life, and resistance to harsh operating conditions. The rifle also features an adjustable gas regulator, allowing the user to tune the weapon for adverse environments or suppressed fire.

The FN ARKA return spring is placed inside the receiver. This allows the FN ARKA to accept a folding stock, while still remaining compatible with AR-pattern buttstocks and pistol grips.

FN ARKA rifle: FN's take on the AR design

FN has retained one of the SCAR system’s most important strengths: a robust locking mechanism with rotating bolt engineered to withstand severe overpressure conditions. This is particularly relevant in demanding military testing scenarios, including “over-the-beach” conditions where water may be present in the bore. Combined with FN’s manufacturing standards, materials, and quality control, the result is a rifle designed for a longer service life than a typical AR-based platform.

The ARKA’s external architecture, however, is built around AR-style ergonomics. Controls are positioned where AR users expect them, but FN has upgraded the concept with a fully ambidextrous and symmetrical control layout. The rifle is equipped with a rear-mounted, T-shaped ambidextrous charging handle and an AR-style forward assist. Selectors and operating levers are duplicated on both sides of the receiver.

Another key difference from the standard AR layout is the placement of the return spring inside the receiver rather than in the buffer tube. This allows the FN ARKA to accept a folding stock, while still remaining compatible with AR-pattern buttstocks and pistol grips. The rifle also offers a long Picatinny top rail and M-LOK interfaces on the sides and lower face of the handguard. Picatinny rail sections are available as accessories.

The FN ARKA is offered in 5.56x45mm NATO with either a 14.5-inch standard barrel and short or long M-LOK handguard, or an 11.25-inch CQC barrel with a short M-LOK handguard. Configurations are available in black or FDE, with either selective-fire or semi-automatic-only trigger groups.

The FN ARKA is also available with a shorter 11.25-inch CQC barrel and with a black finish.
