Savage introduces the Impulse Mountain Hunter, the lightweight version of its straight-pull rifle

After introducing the Impulse straight-pull rifle last year, Savage Arms is adding a new lightweight variant: the Impulse Mountain Hunter.

The stainless steel barrel is carbon fiber wrapped with a matte finish. The muzzle is threaded.

Weighing on average some 1.5 lb/700 g less then the previous models (it depends on caliber) thanks to an exclusive Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped stainless steel barrel and a rugged grey polymer stock, the rifle “is lightweight so you can achieve higher altitudes and longer treks for big game,” according to the the manufacturer's claim.

The barrel also features a threaded muzzle (5/8-24) for the mounting of accessories, including suppressors – a muzzle brake comes as standard. Length-of-pull and comb height are adjustable with AccuFit technology.

Savage Impulse Mountain Hunter, straight-pull action with Hexlock system

The Savage Impulse Mountain Hunter is a straight-pull rifle. Receiver is aluminum with integral 1-piece 20 MOA rail.

The core of the new variant of the Impulse rifle is its straight-pull action, of course, allowing for a fast and instinctive cycling: compared to a traditional bolt-action rifle, which requires four motions (up, rearward, forward, and down), the Impulse only requires two motions, back and forward.

In the grey polymer stock of the Savage Impulse Mountain Hunter length-of-pull and comb height are adjustable with AccuFit technology.

Add to this the 13 patented innovations that Savage built into it to improve efficiency, repeatable accuracy and enhanced safety. Among them, the Hexlock symmetrical bearing system, that expands and remains engaged as gas pressure builds allowing for superior safety.

The bolt handle is ambidextrous, removable and multi-positional.

The bolt handle is ambidextrous, removable and multi-positional. The straight-pull action smoothly slides inside an aluminum receiver with integral 1-piece 20 MOA rail. Tang safety is a familiar 2-position type.

Magazine capacity ranges from 2 to 4 rounds, depending on caliber – just like the barrel length, from 22 to 24 inches.

Calibers available at present are: 6.5 Creedmoor, 28 Nosler, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum, .300 Winchester Short Magnum, .308 Winchester, 7mm PRC and 6.5 PRC.

Price in the U.S. for the new Savage Impulse Mountain Hunter straight-pull rifle is $2,437, whatever caliber you choose.
