Shotguns fed from box magazines are nothing new: it was Mossberg itself, back in 1957, that introduced the 200K model in 12 gauge to the market with this then-unprecedented feature. This was followed in the 1980s by a number of Italian models such as the Valtro 5, the ATIS Trusty and, above all, the Franchi SPAS 15. With the advent of dynamic sports such as IPSC shooting, which reserves a specific division for shotguns (the Open Division), pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns with box magazines made their way further onto the market, often defining the popularity of outsider manufacturers such as Derya and Saiga. In this division, the American Mossberg remains a powerhouse with the various versions of its 590 model, of which we present the latest and most recent iteration.

The Mossberg 590RM Mag-Fed

Based on the tried and tested 590 platform, the 590RM Mag-Fed Stand-Off version in 12ga with 2 3/4" (70mm) chamber introduces a detachable magazine to this model line, a solution that breaks with the tradition of the tubular magazine typical of pump-action shotguns. The result is a gun designed for professional use, where fast reloading and modularity make the difference.
The heart of the system remains the Mossberg pump action, synonymous with reliability even under the harshest conditions. The double-stack polymer magazine with a capacity of up to 10 rounds is the first of its kind to be industrially produced and allows for faster reloading than conventional systems.
Available with different capacities, the magazine allows the shotgun to be adapted to operational requirements. The tactical advantage offered by the detachable magazine on a 12 gauge shotgun for professional use is the ability to quickly switch from one type of ammunition to another (lethal/nonlethal) to adapt it to the actual operational scenario. The magazine body is reinforced by a series of longitudinal ribs that contribute to making its structure very solid and, above all, reliable. Also in order to facilitate quick magazine changes, the magwell is flared.
Among the new features introduced on this version is the manual safety with rotary selector in the AR-15 usual position, which allows for positive safety engagement and disengagement without moving the hand from the correct grip. The trigger has a straight blade and a very crisp release.

The stock is a tactical, polymer type, quickly adjustable to five positions to improve ergonomics and gun control, with an LOP (the distance between the recoil pad and the trigger blade) that can be adjusted between 30.48-38.7cm. The AR-15 pistol grip and oversized trigger guard provide a firm grip and trigger control even with gloves or in difficult conditions. Equal importance has been attached to the ergonomic design of the polymer handguard, which is made to offer maximum gripping surface and best transfer motion to the slide bar. Two stops at both ends of the handguard prevent the operator's hand from slipping and losing contact. There is also a Picatinny rail on top of the receiver, which allows for the mounting of optics, lights or other accessories. The shotgun comes factory with a set of Magpul MBUS3 flip-up sights.
The barrel of the Mossberg 590RM Mag-Fed Stand-Off is 18.5 inches, or 47cm, long. It has a cylindrical choke and is optimized for use with various types of 12ga loads. For about four-fifths of its length, the barrel is protected by a shroud that serves primarily as a heat shield. On the front of the tube on which the handguard slides there is a double M-LOK interface that allows for the attachment of accessories and the sling.
The Stand-Off version of the Mossberg 590 RM is also characterized by the muzzle device specifically designed for door breaching. The crenelated door breacher, especially when used with specific ammunition, makes it possible to transform the shotgun into a tool for dynamic room entry, increasing the safety and effectiveness of the operation. This makes it a specific tool for intervention units and special forces.
The Mossberg 590RM Mag-Fed Stand-Off is clearly aimed at a professional audience and represents an advanced platform for specific uses, but is also interesting for the civilian market. In the USA, it is sold at $1,085 (about 930 euros).
