Mossberg 590 Thunder Ranch: Clint Smith’s take on the classic pump-action shotgun

The receiver is cut for direct mounting of a micro red dot using the Shield RMSc footprint.

The Mossberg 590 Thunder Ranch is a purpose-built version of the well-known American pump-action shotgun, developed by Mossberg in cooperation with Thunder Ranch, the training facility founded in 1993 by Clint Smith, an American instructor with decades of experience in professional and defensive firearms training.

The model name directly reflects that collaboration with Smith’s school, and the configuration goes well beyond cosmetic changes. The shotgun incorporates features selected on the basis of experience gained through practical training.

Mechanically, it retains the proven design of the Mossberg 590 family, with pump-action operation, dual action bars, dual extractors and the familiar sliding safety located on top of the aluminum receiver. The 590 Thunder Ranch is chambered for 12-gauge 3-inch shells and uses an 18.5-inch (470 mm) cylinder-bore barrel. Its tubular magazine provides a capacity of 6+1 rounds when using 2¾-inch shells. Visually, the model is distinguished primarily by the Patriot Brown Cerakote finish applied to the receiver and barrel, together with the distinctive Thunder Ranch logo on the side of the gun. The furniture is black synthetic and includes a traditional corncob-style forend with deep grooves that provide a secure grip when cycling the action.

One of the features that sets this version apart from more traditional 590 configurations is the receiver cut for direct mounting of a micro red dot using the Shield RMSc footprint. When no optic is installed, the interface is protected by a cover plate.

For use with iron sights, the shotgun is fitted with a fiber-optic front sight manufactured by Italian specialist LPA. The stock also has a relatively short 13-inch (330 mm) length of pull, helping keep the shotgun compact and easy to handle.

The Mossberg 590 Thunder Ranch, with 18.5” barrel, Patriot Brown Cerakote finish, 6+1 capacity, 13-inch LOP and Shield RMSc optic-ready receiver has a suggested retail price of $662.
