Beretta ARX200 A1 DMR 13" Black: Beretta's Ultra-Compact 7.62 NATO Designated Marksman Rifle 

The ARX200 is Beretta's battle rifle platform, chambered in both .308 Winchester and 7.62×51mm NATO, and available in either semi-automatic or select-fire configurations. Derived from the ARX160, it shares the same overall design philosophy, including a low-pressure short-stroke gas piston operating system with a rotating multi-lug bolt, enginereed to support the full-power 7.62 NATO cartridge. 

The rifle feeds from proprietary Beretta magazines, but by installing the optional modular magazine well adapter it also accepts SR25-pattern magazines, including popular options from Magpul (PMAG), Lancer, and Knight's Armament. 

In its standard configuration with a 16" barrel, the ARX200 is capable of engaging targets out to 600 meters (656 yards) while maintaining accuracy better than 2 MOA. 

All versions of the ARX200 feature a three-position adjustable gas regulator - Normal, Suppressed, and Critical (N-S-C) - allowing reliable operation with sound suppressors or under adverse conditions such as heavy fouling, mud, or sand. The Critical setting also ensures reliable cycling with reduced-power ammunition, including blanks. 

The ARX200 currently serves as the designated marksman rifle in several units of the Italian Armed Forces and has also been adopted by Argentina as part of a major procurement program. Additional military and law enforcement organizations are either fielding or evaluating the platform. 

Depending on configuration, the rifle weighs between just over 4 kg and just under 5 kg (approximately 8.8 to 11 lbs). The handguard combines KeyMod accessory interfaces with a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail, providing ample flexibility for optics and mission-specific accessories. 

Ergonomics and the New ARX200 A1 DMR 13" Black 

The ARX200 is the product of extensive ergonomic and engineering development. Among its standout features are a reversible charging handle, fully ambidextrous mirrored controls, a modular design, and an aluminum receiver core overmolded with a high-strength, high-temperature technopolymer to reduce overall weight. 

The standard ARX200 DMR configuration, equipped with a 20" barrel, an extended top rail, and a fully adjustable folding stock designed specifically for the designated marksman role, is capable of engaging targets out to 800 meters (875 yards) while maintaining accuracy better than 1.5 MOA with standard ammunition. When paired with match-grade loads, the platform is capable of approaching 1 MOA accuracy. 

The Beretta ARX200 A1 DMR 13” Black

Our focus here, however, is on a very different configuration. The new ARX200 A1 DMR 13" Black was developed in close cooperation with the 2nd Mobile Brigade of the Italian Carabinieri to meet that unit's specific operational requirements. 

Built around a compact 13" barrel, this version combines the power and long-range capability of the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge with an exceptionally compact size. The Carabinieri API (Aliquote di Primo Intervento, or First Response Units) had previously already fielded a 13" version of the ARX200 DMR, seeking a rifle that offered both compact handling and the precision needed for engagements out to approximately 500 meters (547 yards). The new A1 builds on that concept with a series of refinements and performance enhancements. 

The platform has been ergonomically optimized for operators wearing gloves and modern tactical equipment while also improving compatibility with daytime optics, NV/Thermal aiming devices, and clip-on systems through its full-length NATO STANAG 4694 top rail. Out of the box, the rifle accepts standard SR25/AR10-pattern magazines and features a new free-floating handguard equipped with M-LOK accessory mounting slots. 

The ARX200 A1 DMR also places greater emphasis on precision and accuracy in both the designated marksman and battle rifle roles. Among the most significant improvements is a redesigned barrel-to-upper receiver interface, with revised barrel retention hardware and a more refined locking arrangement engineered to enhance rigidity and consistency. The barrel retains its 1:11" right-hand, four-groove rifling, optimized for 168- and 175-grain bullets. 

The rifle features a two-stage, semi-automatic-only trigger, a deliberate choice that enhances precision for the designated marksman role while preserving the operational flexibility expected from the ARX200 platform. 

The polymer folding stock is exceptionally stable and well engineered while allowing the rifle to be folded into an even more compact package for transport. Both the cheekpiece and length of pull are micrometer adjustable, the buttpad height can also be adjusted, and a rear monopod can be mounted to the integrated NATO rail as an alternative to a traditional rear support bag. Quick-detach sling attachment points are also provided, both on the stock and on the weapon. 

The pistol grip interface is fully compatible with the AR-15 grip standard. 

Although the rifle evaluated for this review featured the 13" barrel specified by the Carabinieri, the ARX200 A1 DMR is also available with 16" and 20" barrels. 

Range Evaluation of the Beretta ARX200 A1 DMR 13" Black 

We evaluated the ARX200 A1 DMR 13" Black equipped with a Steiner M8Xi 1-8×24 LPVO using selected 7.62×51mm NATO ammunition loading with Match 175gr bullets at Beretta Defense Technologies' indoor test range adjacent to the renowned Sala Azzurra military showroom. The facility offers firing distances from 25 to 100 meters (up to 109 yards) and allows both semi-automatic and select-fire testing under controlled conditions. 

The rifle was fired both offhand and from the bench using a front rest. The results were impressive. Despite its compact 13" barrel and full-power 7.62 NATO chambering, the ARX200 A1 DMR Black proved exceptionally well balanced and easy to control. The platform manages recoil effectively while delivering the performance expected from a full-power rifle in an unusually compact package. Even during rapid-fire strings and more dynamic shooting drills, the rifle remained predictable and controllable. 

From the bench, five-shot groups averaged just over 0.5 MOA, with the best group measuring 15 mm (0.59") at 100 meters (109 yards). The two-stage trigger was outstanding, offering excellent control with minimal creep and a crisp, clean break after a smooth first stage. 

Wrapping up 

This ultra-compact version of the ARX200 A1 DMR offers an exceptionally compelling solution for applications requiring a designated marksman rifle that retains the power and terminal performance of the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge while significantly reducing overall size compared to traditional DMR platforms. 

The combination of compactness, accuracy, and full-power performance makes this configuration a true force multiplier in the hands of a properly trained operator, completely satisfying the requirements sought by the 2nd Mobile Brigade of the Italian Carabinieri.
