With the latest addition to the FN 509 family, FN America follows the trend already established by other manufacturers (such as GLOCK, with the G34 MOS): the new FN 509 Midsize MRD combines a 15-round frame size with FN’s patented optics mounting platform. The pistol features in fact the FN Low Profile Optics Mounting System, with the option of direct mounting more than 10 different miniature red dot optics.

In short, it's a striker fired, polymer frame pistol with a cold hammer-forged stainless steel four-inch barrel and a Browning-Petter locking system chambered for the 9 mm Luger (9x19) caliber. The FN 509 Midsize MRD features a slide with optics mounting package, a midsized frame, a 15-round magazine and is compatible with larger capacity FN 509 magazines with use of a sleeve.
The improved, fully ambidextrous controls aid in manipulation, the new improved texturing on the two included backstraps provides better recoil management, and a new flatter faced trigger allows for more controllable trigger press and cleaner break. FN 509 Midsize MRD also features an external extractor. a loaded chamber indicator, a MIL-STD-1913 accessory mounting rail and improved front and rear cocking serrations.
FN 509 Midsize MRD with co-witness iron sights
The Midsize MRD features blacked-out cowitness iron sights that allow the user to maintain focus on the red dot of their optic with a clear sight picture. All in all, it retains full-sized pistol performance in an easily concealed package. For a MSRP of 799 USD, the new FN's pistol ships in a soft case with two 15- or 10-round magazines, two interchangeable backstraps, a locking device and optics mounting hardware in a soft-sided zip case.
