New Kimber Next Gen 1911 pistols, classic style for the 21th century

It was January of this year that when Kimber introduced the 2K11 series, Kimber's first 1911-style double-stack pistol with a stainless steel frame and aluminum grip module, chambered in .45 and 9mm. Just the time for the market to digest the news, and the US manufacturer drops a new pistol expressly designed for performance and reliability: meet the Next Gen 1911 series, available in two versions and in both 9mm and .45 ACP. Price tag is the always same, anyway, at $999.

Kimber Next Gen 1911, 2K11 modern features with a classic flavor

Kimber's two-tone Next Gen 1911
Kimber's  two-tone Next Gen 1911 features a Kimpro II black finished slide.

What's new and/or different? The Next Gen 1911 pistols actually carry over several of the 2K11's features, including in particular the external extractor and an optic-ready slide. The first improves reliability over the original 1911 internal extractor, while the other is indispensable in a modern handgun, considering the widespread use of red dot sights.

Grips
The all-stainless version of the Next Gen 1911. Grips are black walnut with G10 inlay.

A major difference compared to the 2K11 series is instead the rounded heel frame for comfort and an overall more “stylish” design coupled to a somewhat sober elegance, underlined by the walnut grips with G10 inlay – even the Kimber logo on the slide is more discreetly placed. Moreover, the Next Gen 1911s are single-stack pistols, with a 9-round magazine capacity. Beavertail and thumb safety are of the extended variery.

The barrel
The barrel bushing with a nice deep crown. Kimber Next Gen 1911 pistols come factory with a red dot front sight and fixed black rear notch, and are optic-ready.

Internally, the Next Gen 1911 come with a sloped disconnector ramp and the GT Trigger already seen in the 2K11 series which, according to the manufacturer, provides match-grade performance. Factory setting is approximately 4.0-5.0 lb.

As mentioned, two versions are offered: one fully in stainless steel with satin finish and a two-tone option with Kimpro II black finished slide.

The new Custom Two-Tone provides flexibility to the shooter looking for a classic design style and the features of a 21st-century 1911,” they claim at Kimber. The slide has not only front and rear cocking serrations, but also a serrated flat top to reduce glare.

Barrel length is the classic 5”/127 mm, sporting a bushing with a nice deep crown. Sights include a red dot front sight and a fixed black rear notch.
