The new 6mm GT shooting cartridge has been designed to deliver outstanding performance in long range and PRS shooting competitions. This cartridge has been developed by Hornady to provide maximum intrinsic precision, low recoil, long barrel life and excellent external ballistic performance. The cartridge has been designed to function perfectly in rifles using standard AICS magazines, ensuring smooth feeding.

The 6mm GT is characterised by a moderate case size and an excellent ballistic coefficient, which allows the use of low-drag bullets. This makes it ideal for PRS (Precision Rifle Series) shooters who are always looking for an precise cartridge with low recoil.
The 6mm GT was accepted as a standard SAAMI cartridge as early as January 2022 and quickly gained popularity in the precision competition scene, particularly in the USA. It has been designed to work perfectly from standard AICS (Accuracy International Compatible System) magazines, guaranteeing jam-free feeding. The cartridge is available as brass with a small rifle primer pocket. Companies that have already signed on to partner Hornady in the use of the new cartridge include Altus Shooting Solutions, Bergara, Browning, Christensen Arms, GA Precision, Proof Research and many others.
The 6mm GT cartridge is built on a bottleneck cartridge case with a length of 43.82 mm for a maximum overall cartridge length of 63.88 mm, and in Hornady's version it features a small rifle primer pocket. Hornady currently has one versions of this cartridge in its catalog, it comes with a boat tail 109-grain ELD Match bullet with a polycarbonate tip and a ballistic coefficient of 557. Muzzle velocity of 2,870 feet per second (874.53 metres per second) with a muzzle energy of 1,993 ft/lb (2702.145 joules). At a distance of 300 yards the velocity is 2,390 feet per second (728.4 metres per second) and the energy is 1,875 joules.
The 6mm GT is a very interesting cartridge, at least on paper, and could be a serious contender for other relatively new cartridges made specifically for PRS and Long Range sport shooting, such as the 6mm Creedmoor and the 6mm ARC. As always, it will be the US market, which has always been a driving force (and hungry for novelty), that will decide whether or not it will be successful internationally.
