Cobalt Kinetics is a young and innovative Utah-based company that prides itself on re-designing the AR-15 platform to produce “a refined and visually stunning choice in arms”. Besides complete rifles, they also offer AR upgrades with some interesting features. Among them, the “Dual Drop” and the Cobalt Advantage Reload System (CARS).

Cobalt Kinetics Dual Drop

The Dual Drop could be hastily described as an AR-15 upper receiver with a second forward assist control mirrored on the left side. Of course, this mechanism offers something more than just another button to push on your rifle.

Cobalt Kinetics claims in fact that Dual Drop improves weapon handling and reload speed putting the system’s controls within reach of the thumb of the shooting hand.

Moreover, since operation is as familiar and instinctive to operate as the slide release on a pistol, it increases safety. The rifle is always kept under control and pointing at the target while the bolt is released, while the trigger finger can remain indexed and ready until the shooter decides to fire.

Cobalt Kinetics CARS

The Cobalt Advantage Reload System in another ingenious device to upgrade any AR-15 based rifle. CARS's function is to autonomously drop an empty magazine and load the chamber once an ammunition supply is present. The user is only required to pull the trigger, and introduce a fresh magazine as ammunition becomes exhausted. This way, they explain at Cobalt Kinetics, shooter's eyes and mind don't lose focus and more time and attention can be spent on target acquisition and engagement, allowing for faster and more accurate shooting. Standard bolt catch and magazine release controls are retained and operational, and shooters can choose to deactivate the magazine drop function operating a simple switch.

All components in the CARS mechanism are made from S-7, D-2, A-1 and O-1 tool steels and all parts are coated in nickel-teflon or treated in LiFe surface conversion.

What's more, being a purely mechanical system, CARS uses no batteries that run out at the wrong time or sensors that don't work when you need them.

The CARS system can be adapted to any AR-15 configuration and AR-15 based caliber at a cost of 800 USD.
