Made for pros and new shooters, easy to rack, optics ready: FN launches the FN 309 MRD in 9mm. The new gun is “designed for reliable, everyday personal defense performance”. “Every design choice is purposeful, offering effortless slide racking force and easy loading magazines,” they claim. In practice, the FN 309 has 25% less slide resistance compared to the FN 509 Tactical pistol, and even the magazines, with a capacity of 16 or 20 rounds, are easy loading, with 40% lower spring force compared to other firearms in the same class. The internal hammer-fired operation also allows for a crisp, light trigger (pull weight is 5 lb, around 2,200 g). Grip texture is also new.
FN 309 MRD, performance made easy

The FN 309 MRD is a polymer-framed pistol with single-action only trigger. The MRD acronym actually stands for micro, or miniature, red dot: the FN 309 MRD features a direct-mount optics-ready slide, compatible with DeltaPoint Pro and Shield RMS footprints. The drift-adjustable polymer sights include an over-molded green fiber-optic front and rounded white accent U-notch rear, and share common dovetail with FN 509 for aftermarket upgrade options.
The 3.8”/96 mm alloy steel barrel comes with a recessed target crown to protect rifling from damage. Magazine release is reversible. The FN 309 MRD has a firing pin block and trigger safety. For even more piece of mind, no trigger pull is required for takedown. Initially available in a non-manual (NMS) safety version, a manual safety option is already on its way. The accessory rail is compatible with popular Streamlight TLR-7 and other weapon-mounted lights
Lastly, the price: at $549, including one 16-round and one extended 20-round polymer magazines, the new FN 309 MDR positions itself as a solid alternative in the very competitive carry gun market.
