A new supply of Negev UX 7.62x51mm machine guns for the Israeli Defence Forces

At the time of writing, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Israel is engaged in fighting the Swords of Iron War (as Israel calls the campaign against Hamas following the terrorist attack on 7 October 2023) and to do so it has purchased an unspecified amount of Negev UX machine guns from IWI (Israel Weapon Industries) worth almost twenty million euros.

Developed in close collaboration with the IDF, the Negev UX machine gun in 7.62x51mm, weighing only 6.8 kg, delivers exceptional firepower, accuracy and reliability with low recoil and a semi-automatic firing mode, while offering superior manoeuvrability. These features proved vital in the diverse combat conditions of the Swords of Iron War, where forces required a lethal yet lightweight and fast-moving solution for fast-moving tactical engagements and close quarter battle (CQB) terrain.

The Negev UX is recognisable by its M-Lok handguard handguard, compact telescopic stock and long Picatinny optic rail.

The NEGEV UX has proven itself to be a significant force multiplier in ground maneuvering, combining a lightweight design, mobility and high firepower to enable forces to operate effectively in complex combat environments, built-up areas and varying ranges. The NEGEV UX includes a long Picatinny rail system for different optics and accessories, compatibility with various IWI suppressors, a telescopic buttstock, an M-LOK rail for different accessories, and a two-position gas regulator for both standard and extreme environmental conditions (such as mud and sand). Supporting both semi-automatic and full-automatic firing modes, the weapon is tailored for use in urban close-quarters combat as well as mid- and long-range engagements that require precision suppressive fire. "We are proud to support the IDF with reliable and effective weapon systems that protect our country and our people," said Ronen Hamudot, vice chairman of SK Group, the holding company that controls IWI.“We are honored to see the IDF expanding its use of the NEGEV, which speaks to the proven effectiveness of the system by one of the most battle-tested armies in the world. The NEGEV’s proven track record of reliability and effectiveness around the world demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative solutions that empower soldiers to succeed in the most challenging conditions.”

Under the agreement, IWI will also provide a comprehensive maintenance package to ensure high operational readiness for infantry forces over an extended period. The machine guns will be delivered to the IDF Ground Forces during 2026 and 2027. The IDF’s ongoing investment in the NEGEV family highlights the system’s versatility, combat-proven performance and growing role in modern infantry warfare.
