Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 OSP, the fourth generation

Almost a quarter of a century is a significant milestone for an industrial product: originally introduced in 2002, the XD Mod.4 OSP marks the fourth generation of Springfield Armory’s well-established XD family, a 9mm striker-fired platform with a polymer frame that has earned its reputation through long-term reliability, practical shooter-focused design, and affordable price. With this latest iteration, the company has refined the formula with a series of meaningful upgrades aimed at meeting the expectations of modern users, while maintaining backward compatibility.

Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 OSP, great value for price

Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 OSP
Factory steel mechanical sights on the Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 OSP include a red fiber-optic front sight and a white-dot rear sight.

At the heart of the XD Mod.4 OSP is an optics-ready slidefactory-milled to accept some of today’s most popular slide-mounted red-dot sights (OSP stands for Optical Sight Pistol). Optional mounting plates make it possible to fit footprints such as Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Docter. The slide itself is hammer-forged and now features deeper front and rear serrations, providing a more secure purchase during press checks, reloads, and general manipulation, even in wet or adverse conditions.

The mechanical sights combine a red fiber-optic front sight with a white-dot rear sight, both made of steel for long-term durability. Beneath the dust cover, the integral MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail adds further versatility, allowing the installation of accessories such as tactical lights or lasers.

Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 OSP
The Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 OSP comes with an aggressively textured frame for superior control. The pistol is manufactured by HS Produkt in Karlovac, Croatia.

Particular attention has also been paid to ergonomics and handling. The revised frame incorporates aggressive texturing in the key contact areas to maximize retention and control under recoil. An undercut trigger guard and an extended beavertail promote a higher hand position, improving leverage and helping the shooter manage the pistol more effectively during rapid strings of fire. Another notable update is the flat-face trigger, designed to offer a more consistent press, a clearly defined wall, and a clean break. The barrel is 4" long, made of hammer forged steel with Melonite finish.

From a safety standpoint, the XD Mod.4 retains the passive systems that have long characterized the platform: the grip safety disengages naturally with a correct firing grip, while a tactile loaded chamber indicator protrudes slightly from the top of the slide when a round is chambered. At the rear, a striker status indicator provides both visual and tactile confirmation of the striker’s condition. Together, these elements add an extra layer of awareness without complicating operation. Capacity is 16+1.

The XD Mod.4 ships with one 16-round stainless steel magazine, and with an MSRP of $399, it positions itself as an especially competitive option in the current striker-fired handgun market, delivering a strong feature set and excellent value on a proven platform.
