From one of the oldest – and best known, even among laymen – knife manufacturers, a quite inexpensive folding knife for the modern adventurer: enter the Camillus Explorer Edge. With a price in the US of just 24.99 it is surely not going to break the bank while still offering some interesting features. Let's find out.
Camillus Explorer Edge with crossbar locking system

Some basic specs first: the Camillus Explorer Edge Folding Knife has a 76 mm drop-point 3Cr13 stainless-steel blade, and measures 190 mm overall with a weight of just 95 grams. Blade edge is plain. The handle is durable black nylon glass fiber that provides solid, no-slip grip and stands up to hard use even in wet conditions. Finish is full black.

Lock type is a crossbar lock: when the blade is deployed, a sliding crossbar moves forward into a grove/notch on the tang, wedging between the tang and the handle's liner and securing the blade in place. The crossbar – here in a bright hi-viz signal red color – extends through both sides of the handle, which means that this locking system can be easily operated by both right- and left-handed users. Moreover, it can also be operated using one hand.
The blade profile is ideal for precision cutting and piercing tasks typically encountered on outdoor excursion: “Whether you’re breaking down animals or tackling outdoor cutting, chopping and related tasks as they arise in the field, blades like the Explorer Edge Folding Knife check all the boxes,” is the claim.
Maybe this is not a stylish or showy knife, most likely it will never be a collector's or “conversation piece”; yet the Camillus Explorer Edge is a honest and solid tool offered at a very interesting price.
