04/11/2015 - IWA 2015 / The Trabzon Gun Industry company (TISAS) showcased a new polymer-frame pistol, dubbed the ZIG P17
The Turkish TISAS ("Trabzon Gun Industry Company")
brand is known to gun enthusiasts in Europe, in the United States and all throughout the world for its line of semiautomatic pistols conceived for sports shooting, home and property defense, and for service issue or duty purposes.
Some of the TISAS handguns sport a more or less original design, while most of them are more or less direct knock-offs of existing models. The TISAS pistols have been previously distributed in Europe under the Smartreloader brand, and are sold in the United States by American Tactical Imports.
In the year 2013, TISAS announced the imminent launch of its first polymer-frame, striker-fired semiautomatic pistol, dubbed the ZIG P17; a 9x19mm caliber, semi-compact handgun, the ZIG P17 was visibly based upon the Millennium and Millennium Pro pistols manufactured in Brazil by Forjas Taurus. Despite having been showcased at several trade shows, and listed as "available" by some distributors, the ZIG P17 is not currently listed on the TISAS catalogue, which leads to the speculation that it might not have actually been put in mass production at all.
At the 2015 edition of the IWA OutdoorClassics expo in Nuremberg (Germany), TISAS first showcased a new semiautomatic pistol that bears the same name − ZIG P17 − but this time openly inspired to the layout of the Croatian-made HS Produkt line of handguns, also sold internationally as the Springfield Armory XD, or "Extreme Duty". Just like the HS Produkt pistols, the new TISAS ZIG P17 is built around a railed polymer frame with a "Combat"-type trigger guard and an ambidextrous magazine release, and appears to feature a striker-fired single-action only trigger.
The TISAS ZIG P17 semiautomatic pistol as shown at the IWA expo in Nuremberg seems to be a straightforward clone of the HS Produkt pistols in all intents and purposes, and under all aspects; the company did not clarify whether or not the new TISAS ZIG P17 is a licensed version of the HS Produkt design.
The only immediately recognizable differences concern the 14-rounds magazine, holding two rounds of 9x19mm Parabellum ammunition less than the original HS Produkt/Springfield XD magazine; the lack of a grip safety, which is one of the most distinguishing features of the HS Produkt design; and the presence of a factory standard ambidextrous frame-mounted safety switch, which is available on the Springfield XD line only as an optional, upon request.
TISAS did not provide any additiona information concerning slated availability and pricing of the ZIG P17 pistol so far.
