At the SHOT Show 2018 Mossberg showcased two new model 590 Shockwave models. The 590 Shockwave series is made up of 14” barrelled, pump-action shotguns, and some weeks ago, a 20-gauge version joined the family. Now Mossberg has announced two new 12-gauge versions: the 590 Shockwave Flat Dark Earth (FDE) with Cerakote-finished receiver, mag tube and barrel, and the portable 590 Shockwave JIC (Just In Case).
Mossberg 590 Shockwave: no special registration
The 590 JIC is housed in a durable, water-resistant tube, and features a Cerakote stainless (non-reflective) finish on exposed metalwork with standard black furniture. Both versions have black synthetic Raptor pistol grip and forend. Receivers are drilled and tapped for the easy-addition of sight systems. These 12-gauge firearms are 2 ¾ and 3-inch capable with 6-round total capacity.
Despite the fact that these guns feature smooth-bore barrels shorter than 18 inches - a limit set in the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA-34) for shotguns - they are legally considered a “Non-NFA Firearm”, and thus do not require a special registration process and the $200 NFA tax stamp.
Being longer than 26 inches / 660 mm overall, these guns are in fact legally considered simply as “firearms”, and thus can be purchased in USA under procedures similar to standard shotguns, although some states might impose additional local limitations and restrictions on these guns.
