Just before the major firearms expo SHOT Show 2017, the renowned US firearms manufacturer Smith & Wesson brought a new generation of pistols to the US market. The M&P M2.0 pistols are part of the popular Military & Police series from Smith & Wesson. We were able to get a hands-on look at the semi-automatic pistol at the Industry Day at the Range and at SHOT Show in Las Vegas.
The M&P series made its debut in the world of firearms over ten years ago – and now it is time for a new generation of polymer pistols. That was what James Debney, CEO of American Outdoor Brands, the parent company of the Smith & Wesson Corporation, announced in a press release.

The M&P M2.0 is available in the following calibers: 9 mm Luger as the M&P 9 M2.0, .40 S&W as the M&P 40 M2.0, and in .45 Auto, which is a popular caliber in the USA, as the M&P 45 M2.0. However, Debney spoke of a completely new product family with multiple expansions to the line over the course of 2017. Hence, we are looking forward to finding out which other versions of the second generation of the M&P will also be available on the market.
Specifications of the Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 pistol
The Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 pistol has a frame made of synthetic polymer. The slide and the barrel are made of stainless steel with a durable corrosion-proof Armonite finish. Each pistol comes with four interchangeable palmswell inserts to allow the polymer frame to be individually customized.

Compared to the first generation of the Military & Police series, the trigger of the M&P M2.0 was adapted and further developed. This means that the M2.0 has a finely calibrated, crisper trigger with a lighter trigger pull. The models in the calibers 9 mm and .40 S&W are not only available in classic black, but also in FDE – Flat Dark Earth. The magazine capacity, overall weight, and the length of the barrel vary according to caliber. Here is a summary of the specifications:
M&P 9 M2.0
Caliber: 9 mm Luger
Barrel length: 10.8 cm / 4.25 in
Weight: 700 g
Magazine capacity: 17+1 rounds
M&P 40 M2.0
Caliber: .40 S&W
Barrel length: 10.8 cm / 4.25 in
Weight: 734 g

M&P 45 M2.0
Caliber: .45 Auto
Barrel length: 11.7 cm / 4.6 in
Weight: 765 g
Magazine capacity: 10+1 rounds
Even if the M&P has “Military” and “Police” in its name, Smith & Wesson indicates that the M&P M2.0 is mainly for personal protection. The recommended retail price for the pistol is 599 US dollars in the USA. It is unknown if and when the M&P M2.0 will be available on the European market. However, we are practically certain that Smith & Wesson will be presenting the second generation of M&P pistols not only at SHOT Show 2017, but also at IWA OutdoorClassics 2017.
