Evolution of the species: Spyderco Salt 2 knives

Like everything in nature, knives evolve too. First came the Delica, then the Salt 1, a pocket-sized cutting tool that combined the 100% rustproof properties of nitrogen-based H-1 steel with the high-performance features and benefits of the Delica design. Lastly Spyderco has introduced its last-born, the Salt 2, that combines all the salient features of the best-in-class Delica 4 Lightweight model with the extraordinary corrosion resistance of nitrogen-based H-1 steel blade. All metal hardware on the Salt 2 is also machined from special non-rusting alloys.

Salt 2 : lightweight folding knife

The Spyderco Tasman Salt 2 with a yellow handle
The Tasman Salt 2 with a high-visibility yellow handle showcased at SHOT Show 2018.

The Salt 2 features enhanced ergonomics, a high-traction bi-directional texturing pattern on the handle, and a black-coated titanium pocket clip. The clip offers a four-position versatility, since it be used for left or right-side, tip-up or tip-down carry. The 0.098” (2.5) rustproof blade is available with PlainEdge or fully serrated SpyderEdge cutting edge and includes a fully accessible trademark round hole for swift, ambidextrous, one-handed opening. Spyderco also offers a second-generation Tasman Salt 2 version with a hawkbill blade profile. The result is a pocket-sized cutting tool that is ideal for anyone who works in or around the water. The radically curved hawkbill blade of the Tasman 2 literally “collects” the material it cuts, drawing it into the concave edge like an animal’s claw. This dynamic generates extreme cutting power, especially on fibrous, hard-to-cut materials like netting, line, webbing, and rope.

Spyderco Salt 2 Black Blade
The Salt 2 Black Blade version features a hollow-ground H-1 blade cloaked in a non-reflective black titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating.

The handle of all Salt 2 knives is patterned after the Delica 4. But where the Delica 4 uses stainless steel handle liners, the Salt 2’s handle components are molded instead from solid fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) and fitted with four sets of threaded stainless steel inserts to mount the four-position clip. The linerless handle also houses the high-strength back lock mechanism.

The Salt 2 can be chosen in two variants, with a high-visibility yellow handle or the “Black Blade” version featuring a hollow-ground H-1 blade cloaked in a non-reflective black titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating.

Overall length of the Salt 2 knives is 7.25” (184 mm) with a blade length of 3.00” (76 mm) and a weight of 2.1 oz (60 g). The closed length is 4.25” (108 mm).

Prices for these lightweight Japan-made knives range from 124.95 USD (around 106 Euro) for the yellow handle version to 139.95 USD (around 118 Euro) for the Black Blade variant.
