Like all pleasures in life, hunting comes in many different shapes and sizes, with personal preferences varying widely amongst hunting enthusiasts. It is therefore difficult, if not completely pointless, to speak of particular types of hunting, breeds of dog or gun that are more or less suitable, or even perfect, for one particular hunter.
Taking guns as an example, while it is true that modern technology has effectively met the demands of many hunters in terms of comfort and ballistic performance, there are still many traditionalists who would not, under any circumstances, trade the satisfaction they get from hunting with a classic break-action side-by-side or over/under shotgun, which, thanks to its look, often makes hunters feel completely in harmony with their passion, for the enhanced performance, ergonomics and third shot offered by semi-automatics.
The fact that these guns are easier to shoulder than semi-automatics, as they are generally shorter, combined with the range of chokes available for the two barrels, contribute to their superior ballistic performance.
There is no doubt that Italy is leading the way in the production of fine hunting and sporting guns, working tirelessly to meet the multiple and diverse needs of hunters of all persuasions.
Right in the heart of Gardone Val Trompia, which is synonymous with gunmaking all around the world, Poli has been producing exclusive hand-made hunting and sporting models for over 40 years.
Over the years, Poli has enhanced its catalogue with a range of highly prestigious guns featuring the latest technical innovations while remaining true to its traditional values.
One such weapon is the Lapis side-by-side shotgun, available in a range of models and a must for hunters who love walked-up game shooting, especially in the woods, where its light weight and ease of aiming make all the difference when it comes to taking an instinctive shot.
Poli Lapis side-by-side shotgun
The Lapis side-by-side shotgun, manufactured by Fratelli Poli Armi, is available in 12 gauge, 20 gauge and 28 gauge.
Although all models in the series share the same mechanics, the luxury models are set apart from the basic models by the addition of engravings and fine aesthetic details.
Hammerless shotgun with Anson & Deeley boxlock action: the main asset of this gun is its ultralight barrels made of chromium-nickel-molybdenum triple-alloy steel for enhanced strength and elasticity. As a result, the shotgun with 65-cm barrels weighs just 2,750 - 2,800 kg.
S. Etienne barrel rib, steel receiver, with a perfectly designed stock-receiver coupling. The stock and forearm are made of standard oil-finished European walnut or root wood.
Customers can choose from a variety of configurations, including English or half pistol grip stock, as well as English or beavertail forearm. Even the trigger mechanism is available as a modern single trigger or traditional double trigger, with automatic or manual ejectors available on request.
The gunmaker prides itself on customising each and every gun it produces, and not just in terms of aesthetics. Founded in 1966 by Paolo Poli, the family tradition continues to this day with sons Tiziano and Pierantonio, together with their team of specialists.
When you visit the company's workshop, your biometric measurements, which are unique to each and every one of us, will be taken, in order to produce a gun that really is "made to measure".
The key ethos on display in the workshop is absolute precision. Nothing is left to chance, with every detail expertly handcrafted to perfection. The result is a gun that almost becomes a natural extension of the hunter's arm, facilitating accurate and instinctive shooting. This makes it perfect for walked-up game shooting with gun dogs, which is what all Poli Lapis side-by-side shotguns tend to be used for, when rapid, instinctive shooting at the slightest flutter of a woodcock through the trees is the key to success. In fact, the engraving on the underside of the shotgun's receiver is dedicated to the queen of the woods.
The rest of the receiver is decorated with hand-etched floral engravings, while a golden crown adorns the top lever. Apart from the price, the other models in the Poli Lapis shotgun series differ in terms of the engravings and the wood grain used.
Lapis Lusso side-by-side shotgun
The Lapis Lusso side-by-side shotgun is available in 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge and .410 bore. The engravings, which are etched entirely by hand, feature a border and a Bulino-style engraving on the underside of the receiver, complemented by an engraved bolt handle and a golden crown. It is available in two versions, either with or without false side plates.
Lapis Extra side-by-side shotgun
The Lapis Extra side-by-side shotgun is available either with or without side plates. The grade 5 walnut is finished in a special oil. Customers can choose either a single or a double trigger and automatic or manual ejectors. The receiver is covered with intricate embossing and Bulino-style engravings, complemented by an engraved bolt handle and a golden crown. As with all shotguns made by the Poli brothers, the Lapis Extra is made to the customer's exact requirements. It is available in 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge and .410 bore.
Lapis Ice side-by-side shotgun
The Lapis Ice completes the series
Rather than featuring intricate engravings, the unique receiver of this shotgun is completely smooth and polished to a mirror-like finish, with rounded side screws and an engraved bolt handle.
Again, the mechanics of this gun can be fully customised by Poli's specialist team to suit each individual hunter. The shotgun is available in all of the main hunting gauges: 12, 16, 20 and 28 and .410 bore.
