Hausken has specialized in the development and manufacture of premium silencers for over 25 years. And the experience certainly shows! Hausken uses high-alloy aluminum to craft its silencers (aka flash suppressors) on state-of-the-art machinery. All of the parts are built according to beautifully engineered designs, precisely manufactured and optimized for maximum durability. So it’s hardly surprising that the market rapturously welcomes models like the new Jakt JD 184 XTRM MKII.
But why mount a silencer anyway?

Silencers increase accuracy, ensure more precise hits and allow for humane hunting. Why is that? Firstly the silencer deflects and slows down the powder gases spitting out the muzzle. This prevents an abrupt relaxation of the gases, which reduces the muzzle blast and therefore the amount of noise. It’s obvious that the actual acoustic performance depends on the internal volume and on how the particular silencer is engineered. Rule of thumb: The more effectively the gas cloud is decelerated, the greater the noise reduction.

Besides noise reduction, reducing recoil is the biggest benefit of a silencer. This is achieved by directing the gases surging down the barrel against the silencer panels. The result: recoil is reduced, and muzzle rise is noticeably less as well. The muzzle flash is also kept tucked away inside the silencer. So hunters treading the fields in twilight or at night won’t be blinded by a sudden burst of flame. And if that’s not enough: silencers also reduce turbulence that might otherwise detract from the bullet’s accuracy. After all, a silencer is, in principle, tothing other than a meticulously engineered, enclosed muzzle brake.
Specs of the Hausken Jakt JD 184 XTRM MKII
As usual with the Norwegian manufacturer Hausken, the silencer’s model name betrays something about its size: the JD 184 XTRM MKII is 184 mm long. It extends the rifle by just 10 cm, as the telescopic design means that the muzzle is enclosed within the silencer. This type is commonly known as an “overbarrel” silencer.
But the Hausken Jakt JD 184 XTRM MKII keeps things just as quiet as its big brother and predecessor, the JD 224.

The Norwegian manufacturer uses high-alloy aluminum to build its silencers. All parts are hard anodized for maximum durability. This makes the Hausken Jakt JD 184 XTRM MKII extremely robust, despite weighing just 313 g. Even so, this compact silencer is able to handle Magnum calibers as well.

The Hausken Jakt JD 184 XTRM MKII is the ideal silencer for standard calibers like .308 Win. or 8x57 IS. It is available for .30 and 8 mm S calibers. But it is not suitable for guns with open sights. The barrel diameter must not exceed 23 mm. Like any silencer, acoustic performance is subject to natural variance, depending on the caliber, barrel length and load. It is around 31–37 dB for the Hausken Jakt JD 184 XTRM MKII. The integrated, woven stainless steel web even makes it quieter than the “normal” model, the JD 184.
The silencer’s outer diameter is 50 mm. Combined with the good acoustic performance, the diminutive dimensions and low weight make the Hausken JD 184 XTRM MKII an ideal companion for all kinds of hunting – but only where silencers are permitted, of course.

Silencers: a few practical tips...

Apply a thin coat of heat-resistant oil or grease to the muzzle thread from time to time. Without this lubrication, the silencer might well jam in the muzzle, in which case it would be impossible to unscrew it from the attachment without causing considerable damage.
Always remove the silencer and air it thoroughly after hunting. Otherwise, the smoke residue trapped inside the silencer may mix with condensation to form an acidic liquid that could damage both it and the gun. What’s the best method? Users are advised to place the silencer on a radiator or other warm surface and leave it there for a while. This produces a chimney effect that encourages fast drying.
Your HAUKSEN silencer will certainly give you lasting pleasure, provided you treat it well and clean it occasionally. And by the way: You don’t have to get your gunsmith to clean the silencer – just do it yourself!
